As someone with Cerebral Palsy, I am constantly looking for manga with realistic disability representation. This is one of the reasons why A Sign Of Affection and A Silent Voice are two of my modern favorites. I have also begun reading Perfect World.
This list is to highlight some of the interesting manga that have yet to be licensed in English that I would love to see licensed in the future.
1. Blade Girl: Kataashi no Runner
Update: Releasing digitally by Kodansha on August 29th, 2023, as Blade Girl.
Blade Girl: Kataashi No Runner tells the story of a girl who finds immense joy in running with the help of a prosthetic after losing one of her legs to cancer. I first heard about this series from a post by Shoujosei News & Info on Twitter. It is classified as a Josei series.
2. Neko To Kurasu
Although it is only two chapters, Neko To Kurasu tells the story of a young woman who worked as a model and becomes wheelchair-bound after an accident. The family cat provides her with unexpected inspiration, and she finds the will to keep going.
3. Suishou no Hibiki
Suishou no Hibiki is another series I discovered, thanks to Shoujosei News & Info on Twitter.
It tells the story of a gifted violinist with Cerebral Palsy connecting with others through music.
4. Mienai Watashi no Koi wa Fujiyuu
Mienai Watashi no Koi wa Fujiyuu Tells the love story of a girl suffering from an eye condition commonly called low vision. Inspired by the author’s own trials and tribulations with the condition. The series is ongoing as of 2020.
