Top 5 Shoujo Reads Of 2023

Hi all! I know things have been a little quiet here on the blog. (I started a new job recently. I am happy to report I am still in children’s book publishing.) I at least wanted to make a quick top 5 list of favorite series I have either started or continued to enjoy this year.

1. A Sign Of Affection

Just finished volume seven recently! I continue to love this series. I am so excited for the anime to premiere next week! I read the series digitally and collect the physical English editions as they are released.

Honey Lemon Soda

I am happy beyond words that the series is finally available in English! I collected Japanese copies of the series. Perhaps it’s because it is originally from Ribon Magazine, but the series’ style is reminiscent of Arina Tanemura’s early works, and I love it. I adore Uka.

3. Honey So Sweet

I finished reading this adorable shoujo fluff gem earlier this year. How did this lovely series escape my notice before last year? Definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to read a shoujo with an earnest and sweet ML who dotes on the FL. I will continue reviewing it here on the blog in the future.

4. Perfect World

I have really enjoyed getting into this series. I am only on volume 3, but I love the disability representation I see. I feel it will be a series where the miscommunication trope rears its ugly head quite a bit, though.

5. Behind The Scenes

It’s a hilarious gem from the mangaka of Ouran High School Host Club. Featuring a ragtag group of talented young college students who provide set and costume design for various film genres/groups all across campus. A college setting is always refreshing when done well.

I hope this short list can give others fun things to read/re-read as we head into 2024.

On a personal note, 2023 has been the most difficult year of my life, with the unexpected passing of my mother in January. I found it almost impossible to write for about six to nine months. Now that her first anniversary is coming up on the 5th, I’m finding the strength to write again. I’m always reading and hope to share an amazing 2024 full of great shoujo manga and reviews!
